For Microsoft Outlook users, PST file corruption is the most common problem. This causes Microsoft Outlook to stop responding or it might not work properly. To handle the non responsive behaviour of Outlook, Microsoft has provided two utilities which help its users to save .pst file from corruption and repair once it get corrupted. The utilities are named as Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) and 2 GB Truncation Utility.
Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe):
Inbox repair tool is a free utility provided by Microsoft and get installed automatically when you configure Outlook in your computer. You can locate the inbox repair tool here -
drive:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\LocaleID\scanpst.exe
To initiate the PST repair process, run the scanpst.exe utility, enter the PST file path and scan it. Once the scan is complete then select “Make a backup copy of the pst file” and repair the file. But this utility has its own limitation like it can’t repair the .pst files of size larger than 2 GB. Also it might be possible that original .pst file get changed after repairing process.
2 GB Truncation Utility:
2 GB Truncation utility allows you to truncate the large PST file so that the size of the file can be reduced. This tool can be downloaded from Microsoft download centre. 2 GB Truncation utility creates a truncated copy of the pst file. For using this utility it is required to have 2GB free hard disk space so that copy of .pst file can be made. But once this utility truncates the .pst file, it can made changes in the original file as it cuts the data from file.
Both Inbox repair tool and 2 GB Truncation utility are many times not effective and each one has certain limitations. So, sometimes in order to save pst file from corruption or to repair highly corrupted .pst file, a third party Outlook PST repair tool can be used.
